Recently, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, several countries, including India, went ito lockdown. Coronavirus outbreaks across the globe demand stricter rules and while governments are taking measures to limit public movement, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in an address talked about what countries need to do along with implementing lockdowns to curb the spreading of the virus.
In a brief from the World Health Organization, the Chief talked about the importance of other measures accompanying lockdowns to ensure eradication of the epidemic. While lockdowns work, they have a limited role in curbing COVID-19 outbreaks. “Asking people to stay home and shutting down population movement is buying time and reducing the pressure on health systems” but it “will not extinguish epidemics” he maintained.
“To slow the spread of COVID19, many countries introduced ‘lockdown’ measures. But on their own, these measures will not extinguish epidemics. We call on all countries to use this time to attack the coronavirus. You've created a 2nd window of opportunity.”- Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

India has been ramping up measures to fight the pandemic. The most recent move announced by PM Narendra Modi has issued a nation-wide lockdown with only essential services in operation. Similar measures have been taken in Italy, France, Spain, South Africa and New Zealand among other countries that have established strict laws to cope with the pandemic.
