Jayalalitha Tamilnadu Cheif Minister passed away : reports

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalithaa died at the age of 68 on Monday evening after suffering a cardiac arrest last week, according to Tamil TV Channels. On Sunday, Tamil Nadu was on alert after Jayalalithaa, under treatment since September 22 at the Apollo Hospitals in Chennai, suffered a cardiac arrest Sunday evening, according to a bulletin issued by the hospital.

At 5.45 pm, alerts were sent to all Tamil Nadu ministers and Governor C Vidyasagar Rao. “Five ministers, including Finance Minister O Panneerselvam, were already in Chennai. All other ministers who had gone to the districts over the weekend also started returning to Chennai. Governor Rao, who was attending the Navy Day function in Mumbai, boarded a flight to Chennai,” an officer said.

As word spread and supporters started gathering, police stepped up deployment in and around Greams Road where the hospital is located. Around 1,000 personnel were on duty outside the hospital around midnight, with police resorting to a mild lathicharge to control the crowd. State Home officials called for calm, saying the hospital had put out a bulletin.

From the time she was admitted to the hospital on September 22, Jayalalithaa was being attended to by a team of 18 senior doctors including intensivists, respiratory physicians and cardiologists besides specialists flown from the AIIMS in New Delhi and London.
