Volvo shows off cyclist protection system

Technology designed to slow vehicle as much as possible when impact becomes inevitable
Volvo has shown off a new system that can detect cyclists and apply the brakes in the event of an impending collision at the Geneva Motor Show.

The technology makes use of radar mounted in the grille of the car to detect the proximity of objects, and a camera in the back of the rear view mirror to determine what the objects actually are.

According to Volvo, once the system determines it is a cyclist and that impact is inevitable, it fully applies the brakes. The system isn't designed to prevent the impact, but rather reduce the speed at which the impact occurs and therefore the severity of injuries.

The system is an expansion of the pedestrian detection systems.
